In the centre of this heathland region among several remote fens lies the remains of what used to be a conventicle (a secret or unlawful religious meeting), during the period that lasted from 1648 to 1672.

Villa Cranendonck, the little white castle, was built in the early 20th century. It was privately owned for quite some time until the municipality became owner or the Cranendonck estate in 1938.

A stones throw from Valkenswaard lies nature reserve De Malpie. The unparalleled beauty of this area led to Valkenswaard being voted “Hiking Municipality of the Year” in 2016.

After the abolition of the medieval ban law by Napoleon, a few enterprising Teuten van Hamont built a windmill a few hundred metres outside the town walls of Hamont. AN XII of 1804 is written on the windmill in large white letters.

Get to know smuggling in the border region at the museum. The region, situated on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium and bordering on Limburg, is known for its many smuggling practices in former times.

A visit to the De Malpie nature reserve is about making choices. There are many hiking and cycling opportunities here, but you can also head out in a canoe or explore the area on horseback.

Fire destroyed the Volmolen or Waalrese Molen in 1962. A double mill stood on this spot in 1350.

Kempense Plassen, also called the Philipvijver (Philips Pond), is on the westside of the Dommel.

This is a small nature reserve on the banks of the Dommel.

Franciscushof consists of a petting zoo, ice cream parlour and bed & breakfast. It is also possible to take a pony ride from this spot in the Catharinadal. This pristine part of Belgian Limburg has a lot to offer!

Several noble families have lived here and at one time it was even owned by the Royal Family. Not much remains of the original castle, which was built around 1250. On its spot now rises a beautiful villa that is available as a wedding location.

The Dommel rises in the highest point of the Kempens Plateau, in an area called Siberia.

The Soerendonks Goor is located west of Soerendonk in the municipality of Cranendonck. This source area of the Strijper Aa river was cultivated in 1957.There is a bird- watching hut at the edge of the pond where you can get a good view of the birds.

The current Belgian-Dutch border was laid down in detail and established officially in 1843. 388 cast-iron border posts were installed along the border.

In most places, it is forbidden to go into nature with a dirt bike. Cranendonck has a place where you can cross-country ski for a fee.
